Undergraduate Academic Eligibility is the ability to enroll in courses at the University of Arizona
The Undergraduate Academic Eligibility Policy is designed to help undergraduates stay on track for degree completion at the University of Arizona. As you work with students, you can use this policy to help them understand their academic standing and next steps. Academic Eligibility is calculated for all undergraduate students at the end of each fall and spring semester and reflects a point-in-time evaluation of the student’s work at the university.
The five academic statuses determine eligibility to enroll in courses at the University; however, they do not determine eligibility to enroll in specific programs, schools, or colleges. As you advise students, you may need to clarify this distinction. Students who are not in Eligible status who earn grades in winter or summer term or have revisions to their academic record that update their cumulative GPA to 2.00 or higher will return to Eligible status.
Where students can view their academic status
The resources below are designed to support you as you help students navigate through the Academic Eligibility status and appeal process.
Academic Eligibility Appeals
The priority deadline for Spring 2026 appeals is May 28, 2026 at 9 AM Arizona time. Spring 2026 appeals may be submitted through October 1, 2026.
Students who do not submit their appeal by the priority deadline and are enrolled for Fall 2026 will have their enrollment dropped. Summer enrollment will be dropped for sessions that have not yet begun as of May 28, 2026. Students may still appeal after the priority deadline and if approved be eligible to enroll in classes but must meet all published deadlines for class enrollment.
Students are encouraged to meet with their Academic Advisor to review the appeal process.
- Review status occurs when a student earns a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above (i.e., good academic standing), but has a semester GPA of less than a 2.00
- Students with a status of Academic Review will be contacted by their college or school to determine if they need assistance to improve their GPA
- Warning status occurs when an undergraduate who was previously Eligible does not earn a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA
- Students with a status of Academic Warning may enroll in courses, however, they will be contacted by their college or school and required to complete an intervention
- Students who begin a semester/term with a status of Academic Warning and earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above at the end of the semester/term will return to Eligible status
- Probation status occurs when a student who begins a semester/term on Academic Warning does not earn a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA at the end of the semester/term
- Students with a status of Academic Probation may enroll in courses, however, they will be required to participate in an intervention developed in partnership with each college or school and the University’s Student Success program
- Students who begin a semester/term with a status of Academic Probation and earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above at the end of the semester/term will return to Eligible status
- Students who are assigned probation and who do not enroll in the next regular term (fall/spring) will be discontinued as they are not eligible for Back2UA. Students who do not enroll in the next regular term (fall/spring) will need to reapply to the university
- Ineligible status occurs when an undergraduate student who begins a semester/term on Academic Probation does not earn a 2.00 or higher cumulative GPA at the end of the semester/term
- Students with a status of Ineligible may not enroll in courses; however, they may submit an appeal (usually for extenuating circumstances) requesting an additional semester/term of Academic Probation status
An undergraduate student’s eligibility to enroll in courses does not ensure Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for financial aid purposes. Students who receive financial aid should consult directly with the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid.
Finding Academic Eligibility Information
How to View a Student's Academic Standing
Advisors should use the Academics tab in Student Center or the Academic Record tab in Modern Student Center to review status. Reminder status is assigned on the last academic term where grades were earned.
Planning Tools to Support Students
Academic Success Plans (ASP’s) are available in UAccess where academic units can provide specific academic goals/requirements students must meet to continue with their current major. ASP dates and how-to guides will be shared by the Advising Resource Center.
Plans allow you to help students maximize their time at the University by creating a roadmap to accomplish goals that may or may not be listed in their Academic Success Plan.
CatCloud is where students access their plans, plan notes, and associated files. Plan items are broken down by term and due dates. Trellis users can utilize pre-formatted templates, clone existing plans, or create their own plans to best cater to the unique needs of the students they support. These individualized plans can be shared with advisors and other university staff.
Students Returning Under Old Policy
Students who stopped taking classes or last earned grades at the University prior to Fall 2019 will have an Academic Standing which is different than the current Academic Eligibility policy. A student who left the University with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, will not be in Good Academic Standing or Academic Eligible status. If they wish to return to the University to complete courses, they will need to reapply. Readmission is not guaranteed. If they are readmitted, they will follow the path and requirements of a student who is at the Academic Warning status. Students should review the Readmission to the University policy.
Analytics Reports
Reports in Analytics: Student-> Student Enrollment-> Academic Eligibility
There are two Analytics reports where you can find your students and their academic standing. Descriptions of both reports are available below. The reports can be filtered by assigned status, college, department, plan, subplan, campus, and location to help you find your students.
The Academic Eligibility Assignment report will show you who entered a status in a particular term and based off the student’s attributes such as College, Department, Plan, and Campus/Location at the time the status was assigned. This report will generally reflect new statuses about two weeks after the end of a Fall or Spring term once the Academic Eligibility process is run by the Office of the Registrar. If you are attempting to pull a list of students in a particular status for outreach purposes you should use the AELI Outreach report.
The Academic Eligibility Outreach List report generates a list of students who are currently in a specific eligibility status, based on student attributes such as College, Department, Plan, and Campus/Location for the current or upcoming major term. The data reflects information from UAccess Student as of the most recent warehouse load, typically from the previous night. To identify students who were assigned a particular status in a specific term, please use the AELI Assignments report instead.
Viewing Academic Eligibility Appeals Submission
There are new ways to identify your Ineligible students, see real time appeal submission information, and appeal decisions with reviewer comments and student recommendations.
Finding Ineligible Students: In UAccess, navigate to Academic Advisement>Student Advisement>UA Find Ineligible Students
This table shows the student their current academic standing, GPA/Cumulative GPA, B-def, GRO count and current service indicators and prior terms service indicators. You can look at ALL students in that term with AINE and you can sort by Academic Program.
Current Appeal Submission Status: In UAccess, navigate to Academic Advisement>Student Advisement>UA Acad Appeal Requests. Here you can view all students who have initiated or submitted an academic eligibility appeal. Appeal statuses you will see: Initiated, Submitted, Under Review, Approved, Denied. You can filter for a specific program or plan. To view a student’s appeal submission please select “View”.
View Individual Academic Appeal Status: Academic Advisement>Student Advisement>UA View Acad Appeal. Here you can search for students who have initiated or submitted an academic eligibility appeal. You cannot see the submitted form but you will see the current status of the appeal. If the student has an appeal you will get results if not, nothing will return.
Service Indicators have been created specifically to identify students who are Ineligible and their current status within the appeal process. The notes below are for advisor use only.
| Service Indicator Code & Name | Reason Code | Notes for Advisors |
| ACP – Continued Probation Status | AA9U | Student’s appeal was approved for one additional semester of Probation Status based on the student’s B-Deficit being 12 units or less |
| ACP – Continued Probation Status | AACR | Student’s appeal was approved for one additional semester of Probation Status based on full appeal committee review |
| ACP – Continued Probation Status | AASS | Student’s appeal was approved for one additional semester of Probation Status based on the student’s participation in the Second Start program |
| AEA – Appeal Submitted/In-Progress | AEAS | Student in Ineligible status has submitted an appeal for review. |
| AIE – Ineligible | ADEN | Student’s appeal was denied – student will remain in Ineligible. |

Finding the Self Assessment Form
All students assigned ADW or ADP standing in a fall or spring term will have a direct link to the form in the communication from the Office of the Registrar.
- If the Academic Eligibility Self-Assessment has been started but not submitted, students can continue the self-assessment under the My Forms tab in the Student Center Form Library (Student Center home page > Quick Links section > Forms link > My Forms tab).
- If the Academic Eligibility Self-Assessment has been submitted, students can view their responses under the My Forms tab in the Student Center Form Library (Student Center home page > Quick Links section > Forms link > My Forms tab).
Returning Student Policies
Students must reapply for admission to the University if any of the following apply:
- They are placed on Academic Probation and do not enroll in the following major semester
- They are deemed Ineligible and do not submit an appeal
- They are deemed Ineligible and their appeal is denied
Please Note: All students are responsible for meeting all deadlines related to the readmission process and enrollment for the admitted term. Refer to the Readmission Deadlines and the Academic Calendar for detailed information.
Students who previously left the University of Arizona with a status of Eligible, Academic Review, or Academic Warning may return through the Back2UA program without submitting a new application for admission. Eligibility timelines for Back2UA are available in the online eligibility table.
For more information visit Readmission to the University policy.
Undergraduate students who have been away from the University of Arizona for three years or more may apply for readmission through the Second Start Readmission Program.
When a student applies through Second Start, their application and prior academic record are reviewed by the academic college offering their intended program of study. Students who are approved by both the college and the University are admitted into the Second Start Program.
Once Second Start conditions are met:
- All UA coursework completed prior to the student’s absence is excluded from the cumulative GPA
- Courses completed with a grade of C or higher continue to count toward degree requirements
- Credits earned with a grade of C or better apply toward specific requirements (e.g., General Education, major, or minor), class standing, and total degree units
- Only coursework completed after Second Start is enacted counts toward University Credit requirements
For more information visit Second Start Readmission policy.
Academic Renewal allows students to exclude grades from a specific period of time from GPA calculations. If eligibility requirements are met, up to four consecutive semesters of coursework may be excluded from calculations related to academic standing, GPA, and graduation eligibility.
Academic Renewal can be a valuable option for students seeking to recover from a challenging academic period. However, students will forfeit credit for all courses, including those with passing grades, taken during the semesters covered by Academic Renewal.
Additional Notes:
- Academic Renewal may be granted only once during a student’s undergraduate academic career
- It is not available to students who have already completed the requirements for a bachelor’s degree
Fore more information visit the Academic Renewal for Undergraduate Students policy.
