Multiple Use of Courses

The use of courses to satisfy more than one requirement in the student's academic program (e.g., fulfilling a major, pre-major, minor, certificate, and/or General Education requirement) is subject to the Undergraduate Multiple Use of Courses policy in addition to any college and department policies on the multiple use of a course.

The term "Multiple Use" of coursework replaces the previously used term "Double Dipping" when referring to the practice of using a course to meet two or more program requirements. With the policy update, this term was changed university-wide to allow more flexibility and accurate representation of academic policy.

Multiple Use of Courses for General Education Degree Requirements

The following coursework may be used to fulfill General Education Foundations requirements while simultaneously fulfilling requirements in a major, pre-major, minor, and/or certificate (see Undergraduate Certificates for additional information):

Math or Statistics
Any Math or Statistics course at or above the level of Calculus I (MATH 113, 122A/B, or 125) may also apply to a major, pre-major, minor, and/or certificate
Second Language
The two higher-level courses taken to satisfy the fourth-semester skill level of the Second Language requirement for a B.A. degree may also apply to a major, pre-major, minor, and/or certificate (see Courses Excluded from the Minor).
Exploring Perspectives & Building Connections
Up to 3 courses may count to fulfill General Education Exploring Perspectives or Building Connections requirements as well as major, pre-major, minor, and/or certificate requirements.

College and Department Restrictions on the Multiple Use of Courses

In addition to the above-listed allowances for the multiple use of General Education courses, some colleges, schools, and departments limit the multiple use of courses in their programs with other majors, minors, or certificates.

The following colleges, schools, and departments ask advisors to honor their restrictions when making course adjustments in majors/minors and when approving students' degree programs—even if the advisor’s home department/college does not prohibit multiple use of their courses.

Academic units should contact catalog@arizona.edu with any changes to the information presented here.
