Instructor Center Resource Guide: Administratively Drop or Reinstate a Student

Students who fail to attend classes may be administratively dropped from the class per the Class Attendance and Participation Policy or the Change of Schedule (Add/Drop) Policy. This resource guide outlines the procedure for administratively dropping a student. Whether a course is removed from the student’s record, or a grade of “W” is assigned depends on the student’s career (undergraduate or graduate) and deadline as listed in the Dates & Deadlines calendar (linked below). The process to administratively reinstate a student is also covered.

How to administratively drop a student

Administrative drop is not an obligation but is at the instructor’s discretion. Students who remain enrolled in a course throughout the term but fail to attend may receive an E grade for the class.

Step 1: Click the Class Roster icon for the class you want to view.

Step 2: Check the box in the Admin Drop column in the row for the appropriate student.

Step 3: Select the Administrative Drop button near the bottom of the page.

Step 4: A message confirmation box will generate. Select OK

Step 5: The student status should now say Dropped or Withdrawn depending on the time when you complete the administrative drop. 

The class will be deleted from the student's record, or a grade of W will be awarded based on the deadlines and career as listed above.

Step 6: You can also see all Dropped students by using the Enrollment Status drop down menu.

How to administratively reinstate a student

When instructors administratively drop students from a class, they may administratively reinstate those students in the same class until the last day of classes for the term. The instructor must request the Administrative Drop/ Reinstatement using the Notify Registrar button located on the class roster.

Step 1: Start by selecting the Class Roster icon for the class.

Step 2: Click the Notify Registrar button near the bottom of the page.

Step 3: This opens the Send Email form within Instructor Center, with the To and Subject fields automatically populated. 

In the email, be sure to include the reinstated student's name and Student ID.

Select the Send Email button to complete the process.
