Grade Point Average (GPA)

Cumulative Grade Point Average: Cumulative grade point averages must be calculated for each career type (i.e., undergraduate, graduate, professional).

The grade-point-average is the arithmetic mean of the grade points earned for all credits taken at the University of Arizona for University Credit or by Special Examination for Grade, where regular grades are awarded. Ordinarily cumulative GPAs are calculated using only the courses at the career level of the student. For example, the undergraduate GPA is based on undergraduate courses only (see Graduate Credit for Seniors, Grade Replacement Opportunity, and Academic Renewal for exceptions).

In determining the cumulative grade point average for a graduate student, only those courses for which graduate credit was received can be used.  (If the graduate student took undergraduate level courses, they are not to be used to calculate the graduate grade point average.)

The same rules apply for calculating a professional student's cumulative grade point average.

Calculating the Grade-Point Average: Using only the courses taken for each student's career(s), the quality-hour value for each course is multiplied by the number of quality points for that grade.  (Quality-hours are those hours earned from courses with A, B, C, D, or E grades.)  This sum is then divided by the sum of the quality hours.
