#2: Apply for your GI Bill:
Apply for your benefit online via VONAPP@ www.gibill.va.gov
- Form 22-1990 for Veterans of all Chapters (33, 30, 1607, [1606 - Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) is required)
- Form 22-1990E for Dependents and Spouses using Chapter. 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill Transfer of Entitlement
- Form 22-5490 for Dependents and Spouses using Chapter. 35 DEA: Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program and Fry Scholarship (dependents or surviving spouse of service members who died in the line of duty while on active duty after September 10, 2001)
If the student is a spouse or dependent of an active duty service member, the service member must transfer his/her benefits to the student through the Department of Defense (DOD). Once the Transfer of Entitlement (TOE) is approved by DOD the student must then apply to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to use the benefit. You can submit an electronic application directly to the VA using the online VONAPP application. Make sure you use the appropriate form (as listed above) to apply or your benefits could be delayed.
Once your application has been submitted in about 30--45 days you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA. Once you have enrolled in classes at UA you can submit your COE to our office by fax (520-621-3665), email to (email@example.com) or bring the COE to our office (Modern Languages, Room 347) to begin using your benefits.
NOTE: If you have previously used a benefit at another school, you will have to fill out the proper transfer form (see below) to get the VA to switch your benefit to our school, notify us of its completion AND we will still need the COE or award letter from you showing the specifics of your VA benefit.
- Veteran Change of Program/Place of Training Form 22-1995
- Dependent/Spouse Change of Program/Place of Training Form 22-5495
If you are using Chapter 31-Vocational Rehabilitation, your Voc Rehab counselor will need to send a copy of your Authorization and Certification of Entrance or Reentrance into Rehabilitation and Certification of Status Form 28-1905 to our office, the Main Campus Bookstore, AND the Bursar’s Office.
If you are using Tuition Assistance (TA) on main campus, submit your TA paperwork to Deborah Milora at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are using TA or Chapter 31, paperwork for UA South students should be emailed to Clara Gonzalez at email@example.com.
#3: Register with VA eBenefits @ https://www.ebenefits.va.gov and make a PREMIUM account. This is where you will go to check your deposits from the VA along with the history of your certification status and months of benefit remaining, setup direct deposit or update your address.
#4: Check your Residency Status (for tuition purposes) and Verification of Lawful Presence (VLP: Prop 300)
View your residency classification and lawful presence status: registrar.arizona.edu/residency
Please contact Residency Classification Office (520-621-3636) immediately if your residency status is incorrect or if you have any questions.
The University of Arizona offers In-State residency for tuition purposes under some military exceptions (Residency Exceptions).
#5: Enroll in classes and submit your veteran certification request:
To prevent delays in receiving your education benefits, you must submit your veteran certification request PRIOR to the beginning of EACH semester or summer session that you want to use your benefits. The amount of benefits you will receive is determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs and is based on the start and end dates of your classes and the number of units for which you are enrolled.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
All VA Educational Benefit Users (Chapters 30, 33, 35, 1606, 1607):
Once tuition calculates for the upcoming term, the Veterans Services Office will start submitting enrollment certifications to the VA Regional Office in Muskogee, OK. The address we submit to the VA is your mailing address in UAccess. In order to update your mailing address with the VA, you must update the info in UAccess Student Center.
The VA takes 6--8 weeks to process certifications AFTER they are sent FROM our office and not when you submitted your request to us. Call the VA at 1.888.442.4551 if you have living stipend financial issues to resolve,
You may request a book and materials deferment for use at the UA Bookstore provided your Bursar’s account shows no past due balance and you agree to pay off the whole balance by the last day of class for the term. Additionally, all NON Chapter. 33 Post 9/11 users may request a tuition deferment via your veteran certification submission.
Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill recipients only:
Financial aid (grants, loans, etc.) will pay towards any balance you currently show due. When the VA makes a payment you will be refunded the difference (depending on your eligibility % and scholarships, it may be all of it or a partial amount).
If you submit your certification request prior to the first day of the term, a Positive Service Indicator (red star at top of page in UAccess Student) that says “CH 33 VETERAN” will be placed on your account to ensure that no late charges are accrued while The University of Arizona waits for the VA to make a Tuition and Fees payment to your Bursar’s account. You will continue to receive invoices from the Bursar until your balance is paid off.
Chapter.1606, 1067, and 30 only:
If you are receiving education benefits under Chapter 30, 1606 or 1607 you must verify your continuing enrollment monthly through WAVE. This can be done on the VA WAVE website or you can call 1 (877) 823-2378. Please note that monthly verification cannot be completed any earlier than the last day of each month.
